
Twenty-seven people died in a fire that broke out at a small gold mine in the south Peruauthorities announced today, in the deadliest accident at a single mine in more than two decades.
In a released statement, local authorities said the fire was caused by a short circuit early Saturday morning in the southern region of Arequipa. Footage released to local media and social media shows plumes of black smoke billowing from the scene.
The small company Yanaquihua is responsible for managing the mine. Its representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
