William had an official role at Saturday’s coronation as heir to the throne. Harry had no role other than as a relative who was… transferred to the third row of Westminster Abbey.

It is unclear if the two met.

Dressed in a suit and with a chain of medals on his chest, Harry smiled playfully as he entered the abbey. He sat not with his immediate family, but between Jack Brooksbank, the husband of his cousin Eugenie, and Princess Alexandra, 86, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, who is reportedly 56th in line to the throne.

William donned full military regalia and at one point knelt and swore allegiance to Charles, a moment that was shockingly anachronistic and strangely touching, according to the NYT. As he swore, he kissed his father on the cheek, and Charles leaned forward and murmured something softly in response.

Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, who – unfairly or not, depending on how you look at these things – is accused of the prince’s rift with his father and brother, stayed at home in California with her two young children. William’s three children were at the abbey with their parents.

Speculation about Harry’s presence or absence dominated the tabloids before the coronation and continued as the ceremony unfolded.

After the coronation, William, Kate and their children boarded an ornate carriage that carried them majestically to Buckingham Palace. There they joined the king, queen and other family members for a traditional appearance on the palace terrace, watching fighter jets fly across the London sky.

Neither Harry nor his uncle, Prince Andrew, who left the family due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, attended the funeral.

Harry, however, was not seen interacting with William, at least not in public. She reportedly headed to the airport to return to California immediately after her coronation, skipping her planned lunch and family portrait. (According to the Daily Telegraph, he wanted to get home in time to say goodnight to his son Archie, whose fourth birthday is Saturday.)
