Stacks of spaghetti were thrown by an unidentified person at a creek near Veterans Park in Old Bridge, New Jersey, according to images posted by local resident Nina Jochnovich.
Jochnovich shared photos of pasta on Facebook that she estimated was hundreds of kilos of spaghetti.
As expected, her post quickly went viral on the internet. Users began to joke about this or theorize about the history of the origin of spaghetti.
“You might say, ‘Who cares about pasta?’ But pasta has a pH level that affects the water. This stream is important to clean up because it feeds the city’s water supply,” said Jochnovich, who was also a candidate for city council.
Immediately after Jochnovich’s post, crews from the local municipality flew to the scene to remove piles of spaghetti.
In an email Thursday, a local official said that after photos of the pasta were shared on Facebook, the Department of Public Works visited the site and found “15 carts of discarded pasta.”
Although Jochnovich said the pasta was cooked, the official said it had softened from days of rain.
According to the New York Times, the woman eventually found out who threw the pasta. “All I know is that this was not a business,” he said. “They were from home, but I don’t know why they had so much spaghetti.”
