Fourteen people were killed and 25 injured when a public transport bus collided with a large truck on a desert highway in southwestern Egypt, medical and police sources told Reuters.
The accident happened Wednesday on the Assuit-Kharga highway, about 400 kilometers southwest of Cairo, in New Valley province, which shares a long border with neighboring Libya, sources said.
Seventeen ambulances were sent to the scene to take the wounded to hospitals, the state news agency MENA reported, citing New Valley Governor Mohamed el-Zamlut.
It is not yet clear how the accident occurred. The bus with 45 passengers was heading to Cairo.
Reckless driving, lax traffic regulations and poor road conditions are the cause of many traffic accidents in Egypt.
Road traffic accidents in Egypt killed 7,101 people in 2021, up 15.2% from 2020, according to a report by the country’s statistics agency CAPMAS last year.
