Texas: Wife of five murder suspect arrested

Texas authorities have arrested people they believe helped a man suspected of killing five of his neighbors escape for four days while police begin their manhunt.

Lamar Nava’s wife is among those arrested.

The massacre took place last Friday in Cleveland, Texas, when neighbors of 38-year-old Francisco Oropesa asked him to stop firing a semi-automatic rifle in the yard because they couldn’t put the child to bed. In response, he reloaded his gun, entered the house of neighbors and killed five people – among the victims was an 8-year-old boy.

The detainee is a Mexican citizen and has been deported from the United States four times since 2009.

At today’s press conference, San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Keane said that other arrests were made, but did not elaborate on the role of these suspects in the crime. “As far as I know, whoever helped this maniac definitely has some kind of problem,” Keane said.

Local, state and federal police searched for the 38-year-old man for four days. Finally, on Tuesday, he was found in a closet under unwashed clothes in a house in Cut and Shut, in neighboring Montgomery County. This city is located about 27 kilometers from Cleveland. He will appear in court today and is expected to be held on $5 million bail.

Sheriff Greg Capers said on Tuesday that the man who provided authorities with information that led to Oropesa’s arrest was entitled to an $80,000 reward.

Most of the victims were shot in the head. All were from Honduras. In total, 10 people lived in the house where Oropesa opened fire, but not all of them were relatives of each other.
