The House and State Senate approved the proposal late Tuesday evening, which is included in New York’s $229 billion budget.

Dozens of US cities have taken or are considering action to even ban natural gas from new construction altogether. However, they are facing strong resistance from restaurants, appliance companies and the gas industry lobby.

“The nation’s first unconstitutional ban on natural gas installations will skyrocket bills and home values,” said Republican Senator Robert Orth.

According to the new law, if it is not repealed along the way, from 2026 in “small” buildings (office and apartment buildings up to seven floors) there will be only an electrical installation. Three years later, this measure will be extended to larger buildings.

Hospitals, infrastructure and catering facilities are exempt from this measure. Buildings, regardless of their use, will also be excluded if the local power grid cannot meet their needs. Existing buildings and appliances still in use today are unaffected.
