US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says he cannot confirm Russian allegations that Ukraine tried to kill President Vladimir Putin with a drone strike and that he considers any claim from the Kremlin to be “dubious”, Reuters reports.

“We just don’t know. We consider everything coming from the Kremlin to be questionable,” Blinken told reporters when asked about the information provided by Russia.

Asked whether the United States would criticize Ukraine if it decided to take retaliatory measures on Russian territory, Blinken said that Kyiv is deciding how to defend itself.

The US Secretary of State also stated that the war is already a strategic defeat for Russia, and the US is confident that Ukraine will regain more territory in any counteroffensive.

Russia said on Wednesday it shot down two Ukrainian drones that tried to attack the Kremlin, condemning the assassination attempt on Vladimir Putin days before a May 9 victory over Nazism parade.

Kyiv has denied its involvement in any drone attack on the Kremlin and stressed that such actions would do nothing for Ukraine on the front line, and would only provoke Russia to take more radical measures.
