The Joe Biden administration is preparing to deploy an additional 1,500 troops on the US southern border with Mexico for a period of 90 days, as it expects an increase in migratory flows from the south in the near future.
There are currently about 2,500 US National Guard troops in the area, who will be joined by about 1,500 soldiers.
The White House, for its part, maintains that the troops stationed there will primarily perform administrative functions so that customs officers can calmly focus on their work.
Last week, the Biden administration announced the creation of special immigration centers in Guatemala And Colombia in which asylum seekers will be able to apply for legal entry into the US without reaching the US border.
The Biden administration also launched a new model whereby asylum seekers would have to use special application / application (CBP One), allowing them to schedule meetings with US officials to review their application.
Next week, specifically on May 11, the rules put in place during the pandemic by the then Trump administration will be lifted under a program called Title 42.
Based on these rules, US authorities could proceed with “automatic” deportation of irregular immigrants and deny asylum applications, citing public health concerns.
However, now that these rules are being lifted, the authorities estimate that immigration flows will rise sharply.
Troy Miller, a senior US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official, testified before Congress last month that migrants trying to cross the border are likely to exceed 10,000 a day in the near future.
However, the issue also has political/election implications in the US, with Republicans accusing the Biden administration of being “compliant” with immigration while, on the other hand, advocacy groups denounce it as “too strict”.
