The White House on Tuesday praised House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, in a rare gesture toward a political rival that came after he gave a strong response to a Russian journalist, saying he supported aid to Ukraine and blaming Russian atrocities after the invasion of Ukraine. “We are glad to hear that Speaker (of the House of Representatives) McCarthy agrees that it is vital that we continue to support Ukraine. “Did he say I don’t support aid to Ukraine?” Kevin McCarthy asked his listeners, pretending not to understand the question.
“No. I voted for aid to Ukraine. I support aid to Ukraine. I do not support what your country has done, what it is doing to Ukraine. I do not support the killing of children that you are doing. And I think you should retire . I don’t think you’re doing it right. And we will continue to support Ukraine because the rest of the world sees things exactly as they are,” McCarthy said.

But even though Kevin McCarthy has said he supports Ukraine, he told the media that he would not support a “blank check” for aid that the Biden administration is asking for.
“The broad bipartisan support for Ukraine that we have seen in Congress has been essential to this effort, and we agree that it is important that this support continues. And we’re glad to hear that from President McCarthy,” a White House spokeswoman said Tuesday.
