“Absolutely unexpected,” commented the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmytro Peskov, quoted by the Interfax agency, an assessment based on classified US information. “Washington is not in a position to provide specific figures, they do not have such information,” he insisted.
US National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said on Monday that 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in Ukraine since December 2022.
“Take into account the figures of Moscow”
Peskov said that the White House official should “timely take into account the figures published by the Ministry of Defense of Russia.”
The German press agency DPA reminds that the last message of the relevant Russian minister, Sergei Shoigu, mentioned the balance of losses of the Russian forces at 5,937 soldiers in September of last year. In November, a spokesman for Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine – one of the regions annexed by Russia and administered by Moscow – confirmed the death of 3,930 militants in the region, likely in addition to Shoigu’s statistics.
In general, according to the DPA, experts believe that these figures are significantly underestimated. Even Kyiv does not publish reliable information about losses among the Ukrainian army, the agency adds.
