His city Oslo opened a statue of the famous Norwegian walrus, killed for reasons of public safety.

Freya, who weighed about 600 kg, was euthanized in August last year, sparking outrage across the country. This mammal became famous for climbing onto boats to sunbathe, and in some cases drowning them.

The life-size bronze sculpture depicts Freya lying on her side on the shore.

“This is how people behave in the wild, but also how people treat people. That’s how we treated Freya. And for this I will name the statue “For our sins,” said the creator Astri Tonoyan.

An online campaign raised $25,000 to create the statue.

“I started this campaign because I am outraged at how the (Norwegian) Fisheries Authority and the state have handled this situation,” campaign organizer Eric Holm told AFP.

Local authorities said people ignored warnings not to get too close to the animal, putting it and themselves at risk. In one of the Freya incidents, police cordoned off a swimming area after a walrus chased a woman, local media reported at the time.

The Norwegian Fisheries Ministry released a photo of a large group of people, including children, standing at arm’s length from the animal.

Fisheries Service CEO Frank Bakke Jensen said the decision to kill the animal was based “on a general assessment of the ongoing threat to human safety.” He claimed that the animal was killed “in a humane way” and its body was examined by veterinarians.

Freya was first spotted in Oslo in mid-July last year and named after the Scandinavian goddess of beauty and love.

As a protected species, elephant seals usually live further north in the Arctic. Usually they do not attack people, with rare exceptions. In 2016, a walrus killed a tourist and a zookeeper at a Chinese wildlife park. The hiker was reportedly taking a selfie with the creature as it dragged him underwater. The guard tried to save the tourist, but the walrus pulled him in too.
