Sudan: Army agrees to extend truce for 72 hours

His army Sudan announced on Sunday evening that it had agreed to an extension of the truce with the RSF paramilitaries.

Both sides confirmed that the formal ceasefire, which was scheduled to expire at midnight Sunday, would be extended by 72 hours in what RSF said was “a response to international, regional and local calls.”

The army and paramilitaries accuse each other of violating the ceasefire as fighting continues into its third week amid fears of a slide into civil war.

Hundreds of people died and thousands were injured after an armed conflict for power broke out on 15 April between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The military said they hope the so-called rebels will abide by the agreement, but believe they intend to continue fighting.

The situation in Khartoum, where the army is fighting RSF forces entrenched in residential areas, was relatively calm on Sunday morning, a Reuters reporter said. However, on Saturday evening, the city center was rocked by the sounds of heavy collisions.

The army announced on Sunday that it had destroyed RSF convoys moving from the west towards Khartoum. The RSF said the army used artillery and warplanes to attack its positions in various parts of Khartoum province.

Reuters was unable to verify these reports.

Apparently in an effort to bolster its forces, the military announced on Saturday that police units are being deployed in the southern part of Khartoum and are gradually expanding to other parts of the capital.
