Chinese Ding Liren became the new world chess champion after defeating the Russian at the 2023 FIDE World Championship.
After a 7-7 draw in a 4-game quick tie-break, Ding took advantage of his opponent’s time trouble and won the final game with Black.
In addition to the world champion trophy, Ding will receive 1.1 million euros for his victory.
The Chinese grandmaster has replaced five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who announced in July that he would not defend his title.
Ding was only invited to the tournament at the last minute to replace Russian Sergey Karjakin, who had been expelled by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for his support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
