
Washington today urged Beijing to stop its “dangerous” actions in the disputed waters of the South Sea. Chinaafter a near-collision between a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and a Philippine vessel.
“We call on Beijing to stop its provocative and dangerous actions,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, reaffirming Washington’s unwavering support for its “ally” Manila.
The United States recalled that “an armed attack in the Pacific Ocean, in the South China Sea, on the Armed Forces of the Philippines, government ships or aircraft, including the Coast Guard, will lead to the fulfillment of U.S. mutual defense obligationswith the Philippines under a 1951 treaty.
