The British Navy ordered an urgent inquiry after reports that documents relating to the operation of a £1.3 billion submarine were found in a pub toilet in the north west of England.
The Sun quoted a source as saying the pub was full when files marked “classified” were found on the toilet floor.
The British Navy attempted to downplay the issue, with a spokesman stating that “these are general training documents that contain no classified information. However, we take all security issues extremely seriously and will investigate the circumstances of their discovery.”
HMS Anson is the fifth of the new Astute-class attack submarines to be delivered to the Royal Navy. These submarines are capable of launching Tomahawk missiles and are described on the British Navy’s website as “the largest, most modern and most powerful attack submarine” in its fleet.
The Royal Navy plans to take it into service only seven submarines of this class by the end of 2026. The last two submarines under construction are HMS Agamemnon. [S124] and HMS Agincourt [S125]. BAE Systems builds all Astute-class submarines for the Royal Navy at Barrow-in-Furness, a port city in Cumbria, England.
