A Dutch court today ordered the 41-year-old Dutchman, whose sperm has fathered 500 to 600 children worldwide, to stop donating.
Jonathan Meyer, according to the newspaper de Telegraaf, according to a court decision, can no longer donate sperm to clinics. What penalty does he face if he continues to donate? 100,000 euros for violation.
The court also ordered Meyer to notify foreign clinics of the destruction of any sperm he has, with the exception of those intended for parents who already had children with him.
The decision follows a civil lawsuit brought by a foundation representing the interests of children born from donor sperm and by Dutch parents who used Meyer as a sperm donor.
They argued that Meyer’s ongoing sperm donation violated the privacy rights of children born from his sperm, whose ability to enter into romantic relationships is hampered by fears of possible incest.
Meyer’s mass sperm donation first came to light in 2017, and he was banned from donating his sperm to Dutch fertility clinics, where he had already fathered more than 100 children.
However, he continued to donate his sperm abroad, including to the international Danish sperm bank Cryos. The 41-year-old also continued to offer himself as a donor on websites where prospective parents are matched with sperm donors, sometimes using a different name, according to Algemeen Dagblad daily.
