Einstein’s dangerous stay in Belgium in 1933 after Hitler came to power

When Adolf Hitler came to power in early 1933, Albert Einstein was already teaching the theory of relativity. Returning to Europe, after a trip to the United States, in March 1933, together with his second wife Elsa, Einstein landed in Belgium, fearing that returning to Germany would be too dangerous.

“My mother knew Einstein well. Every morning he walked along the promenade or along the beach,” said Bridget Hooks, a 78-year-old Belgian who works with the AFP team, following in the footsteps of the scientist.

The Hawks family ran the Bellevue Hotel in De Haan for decades, while the Einsteins rented the nearby Villa Savoyarde. Einstein drank coffee on the hotel terrace after a walk in the fresh air. “That was his routine,” Hawkes said.
