White House urges Americans to leave Sudan within 48 hours

The situation in Sudan could worsen at any time, and Americans must leave the country within the next 24-48 hours, a White House spokeswoman said today. Karine Jean-Pierre.

The US government is concerned ceasefire violations in Sudan and the State Department considers a de-escalation unlikely, although the Sudanese military had previously agreed to a 72-hour extension to the current ceasefire, which expires at midnight Friday.

For its part, a Pentagon spokesman said today that few US citizens are still looking for ways to leave Sudan.

When asked about the possibility of military evacuation by sea, brig Patrick Ryder he said: “We are working closely with the State Department to determine the number of Americans willing to leave Sudan… We currently have indications that the number is relatively low. However, we understand that data can change quickly.”
