A new video that appeared on social networks shows how the Russian military once again distorted reality by triumphantly announcing the destruction of the German-made Gepard anti-aircraft missile.

The video appeared on the Russian Telegram network after the other day the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced in one of its messages about the progress of a “special military operation” that its forces destroyed a Cheetah armored car with the help of a kamikaze drone.

But the footage shows how the Russian Lancet drone ricochets away from the armor of the military vehicle, exploding without causing it much damage.

However, some netizens noted that the battleship’s radar antenna was not active when it was targeted, suggesting that it was actually abandoned by its crew, but this is not entirely clear.

Be that as it may, the appearance of the recording caused a wave of irony in social networks, given that in the daily assessment presented in the video format of Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, the Ministry of Defense of Russia presented 3 videos of the destruction of a piece of equipment. of the Ukrainian army, but only showed a screenshot of the recording of the Cheetah strike.

The exaggerations of the spokesman of the Ministry of Defense of Moscow, Konashenkov, who previously announced the destruction of a part of Western military equipment even before it was sent to Ukraine, are already known.

On February 20, Serhiy Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, added that Moscow’s armed forces had destroyed “most” of the NATO equipment received by Ukraine.

He then called the destruction of 1,170 air defense systems, 440 tanks, 1,510 BMPs, and 655 artillery systems received by Ukraine from NATO partners, figures several times higher than the actual number of those who arrived in Kyiv.

What is Gepard armor

Although sometimes mistakenly presented in the press as a “tank”, the Cheetah is actually a mobile, self-propelled, armored anti-aircraft system. Developed by the German arms industry in the 1960s, it can work in all weather conditions.

Produced by the military company Krauss Maffei-Wegmann (KMW), the Gepard system was supplied to countries such as Germany, Belgium, Romania and the Netherlands.

Designed primarily for air defense, the anti-aircraft system can also target ground targets. The tracked armored Gepard with three crew members develops a maximum speed of 65 km/h and has an autonomy of 550 kilometers.

The air battleship is equipped with independent target tracking and surveillance radars, and is equipped with “advanced training and simulation equipment,” according to KMW. Equipped with two 35 mm automatic cannons, “the Gepard system’s high mobility and rapid turret rotation provide the extremely short reaction time necessary to combat air threats.”

The Gepard is built on the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank. It is not only effective against fighter jets, attack helicopters and missiles, but, according to the manufacturer, it can “also successfully combat drones.”

A video that appeared on social media last December confirmed the effectiveness of this armored vehicle against Russian missiles, showing how the Ukrainian military shot down a Cheetah cruise missile during a new wave of Russian strikes on Ukraine.

In February, the German government announced that it had delivered 32 cheetahs to Ukraine and was preparing new ones.
