A new study shows that Iran has managed to build a powerful arms industry based on Western technology and how Russia is using it against Ukrainian cities, CNN reports.
Conflict Armament Research (CAR), a British organization that examines weapons components, has determined that the Shahed-136 drones sold to Russia by Iran are powered by an engine based on German technology that was illegally acquired by Iran nearly 20 years ago.
The conclusion, drawn from a detailed study of the components seized in Ukraine, underscores Iran’s ability to imitate and improve military technology it obtained illegally.
Western officials are also concerned that Russia might share Western-made weapons and equipment recovered from the battlefield with the Iranians. To date, there is no solid evidence that this happened.
However, relations between Tehran and Moscow have become much closer. Russia wants Iranian drones and ballistic missiles; Iran wants Russian investment and trade.
According to Iranian officials, over the past year Russia has become the largest foreign investor in Iran.
And for the Russians, Iranian drones are a profitable substitute for much more expensive missiles, stocks of which, according to Western officials, are dwindling.
Experts believe that, for example, the Shahed-186 drone costs about $20,000, at least compared to the cost of the Kalibr cruise missile. (news.ro)
