German landlord gets the right to sunbathe naked despite complaints from tenants

A German landlord has been given the right to sunbathe naked in the backyard of his Frankfurt home despite complaints from tenants.

The landlord went to court after the rental company stopped paying because of his habit of sunbathing naked in the shared yard, the Frankfurt High District Court heard.

The company has delayed payments for its office space in a residential building in a prestigious area of the city.

However, an independent legal team did not confirm the company’s claims.

“On the contrary, the plaintiff reliably stated that he always wore a bathrobe, which he took off only right in front of the sunbed,” the court said. In ruling in favor of the owner, the court stated that the usefulness of the property “was not affected by the fact that the plaintiff was sitting naked in the yard.”

Nevertheless, the court ruled that tenants have the right to reduce their payments for three months – but this was due to large-scale construction work in the area.

Freikörperkultur, better known by its acronym FKK, which translates as Free Body Culture, has a long and established history in the country. It began in the late 19th century as part of the Lebensreform (“Life Reform”) movement, a sort of hippie-like set of lifestyle trends aimed at improving health.

FKK was way ahead of its time in some ways, promoting raw and organic foods, alternative medicine, water treatments, eschewing alcohol, tobacco, vaccines, and accepting public nudity. The movement grew rapidly throughout the country: the first FKK club was founded in Essen in 1898. An exclusive nude beach was opened on the northern German island of Sylt in 1920. Six years later, Adolf Koch opened a naturist school in Berlin that promoted nude sports along with sexual hygiene.
