The Russian prosecutor’s office arrested Colonel Oleksandr Denisov, who is accused of stealing 7 T-90 tank engines as part of the organized crime group, Kommersant reports.
According to the investigation, from November 2021 to April 2022, the colonel stole tank engines worth 20.5 million rubles, his criminal activity continued even after the start of the “special forces operation”.
The indictment drawn up by the investigation also states that 44-year-old Denisov perfected the criminal network while serving as head of the technical assistance service for the Armed Forces of the Southern Military District, which took an active part in the invasion of Ukraine.
But prosecutors say he stole seven B-92S2 engines intended for installation on T-90 tanks, the most advanced generation of Russian tanks. The T-90M model is the most modern model of the Russian army and the pride of the country’s arms industry, if we do not take into account that the T-14 “Armata” tank has not yet proven its effectiveness on the battlefield.
The court chose a preventive measure for the officer in the form of detention for a period of two months. The officer’s lawyers say there is no evidence of his guilt.
The Russian colonel, like his predecessors, insists on his innocence
“An innocent person answers. There is no evidence of Denisov’s guilt,” one of them claims.
If he is found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison, and the prosecutor’s office is asking for his actions to be classified as aggravated.
The largest Russian financial daily “Kommersant” reminds that in 2019, the former head of the tank supply department of the same Southern Military District, Lieutenant Colonel Dmytro Sedov, and two other officers were found guilty of similar crimes.
They were sentenced to 2 years to 6 months and 3 years of imprisonment for attempting to steal four KamAZ engines, the damage from which would amount to 1.3 million rubles.
The officers, who denied involvement in the crime, appealed the sentence, but the appeals court found it legal and justified.
