The British government announced today that it has removed more than 300 people, most of them British citizens, from Sudan in an evacuation operation that began on Tuesday with the help of military aircraft.
A total of 301 people were evacuated on four flights, Prime Minister spokesman Rishi Sunak told reporters. He added that four more planes would take off this evening.
“These flights were full or nearly full. Many go to the airport near Khartoum. “According to the information we have, there are no major problems around the airport,” but “we are seeing a continuous, smooth flow of people” seeking to leave the country.
Currently, only holders of British passports and any dependents are allowed on board British aircraft. Citizens of other countries also apply if there are vacancies. The plane then heads to the British base in Cyprus.
Some 2,000 British citizens told the British authorities that they wanted to leave Sudan.
