The International Book Fair opens in Leipzig. The program includes speeches by former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Aleksievich, as well as “Ukraine Day”.

After a three-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Leipzig is hosting the International Book Fair again. On the evening of April 26, at the opening, the Russian writer and poet Maria Stepanova will receive the prestigious award – “For the contribution to European understanding”. And on Thursday, April 27, the fair will open its doors to visitors. In addition, the literary festival “Leipzig reads” (“Leipzig Liest”) will begin.

The fair and festival runs until Sunday, April 30th. Around 2,000 participants brought new books from 40 countries to Leipzig. This year’s guest of honor is Austria: it is the most represented this season.

Famous guests of the fair and festival in Leipzig

On April 28, Svetlana Aleksievich, Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature from Belarus, will perform at the fair. The topic of discussion is the creation of the publishing house PFLAŬMBAŬM and how female writers manage to publish literary works under the conditions of the totalitarian regime in modern Belarus. Following this discussion, Belarusian writer Eva Vezhnovets will speak to the public at the Leipzig café Europa.

On April 29, within the framework of the fair in the art space Kunstkraftwerk, the day of Ukraine will be held – from 4 pm to 11 pm. Ukrainian journalists, writers, poets and musicians will perform in front of the audience. Detailed program – link.

On the evening of Saturday, April 29, former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel will perform for the public as part of the festival at the Leipzig Drama Theatre. She will speak with Giovanni di Lorenzo, editor-in-chief of the highly regarded and popular newspaper Die Zeit, about the current socio-political situation in Germany and the most pressing issues, and will also answer questions from the audience.

Remember that the Leipzig Book Fair is the second largest and most important after Frankfurt. Held annually in the spring. Numerous publishers from Germany and other countries of the world present here fiction, school books, newspapers and magazines, calendars, art albums, audio books. The book fair is traditionally held in conjunction with the Leipzig Reads spring literary festival.
