How “too dangerous” for her Europe Airbus executive chairman describes colossal plan United States accelerate the transition to green energyeven urging the Old Continent to go beyond the current “half-measures”.
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), U.S. President Joe Biden’s big climate plan, provides for $370 billion in investments to fight climate change: electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, and fossil-based sustainable jet fuel.
“The IRA is a ‘package’ that, when viewed from an aviation point of view, is very positive, but when viewed from the point of view of European industry, it is very negative,” summed up Guillaume Fourier in an interview with France Inter radio, head of the mentioned European aviation industry, whose factories are located on both sides of the Atlantic.
“It’s very positive from an aviation standpoint because it’s very subsidizing fuel switching and we’re seeing the speed at which the industry is adapting to what the United States is doing and we’re seeing huge investment there, we’re going to be able to buy carbon-free fuel at very favorable prices,” said the head of Airbus.
But, on the contrary, “it attracts investment in the US, therefore it is unfavorable for European industry,” Faury continued. “As a European, I think that the IRA is very dangerous for Europe and it is very difficult for Europe to react,” he added, expressing regret about this.
“Europe has chosen more coercive methods, with taxes, barriers, to try to transform its industry, and it’s really much more interesting to go where there is help than where there are problems, taxes. And so the US is destabilizing the game,” explains the head of Airbus.
“Europeans should be encouraged” by the American measures, he added: “So far only half-measures have been taken, and I am concerned about Europe’s ability or inability to move so quickly and so decisively.”
