A new world war is likely, but it is not inevitable, said on Tuesday the vice-president of the Russian Security Council Dmytro Medvedev, who emphasized that the “quiet division” of Ukraine is “better” than a world war and is caused in this context by the “aspiration” of Poland. Hungary and Romania, TASS reports. The belligerent statements were made shortly after the head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, declared that Ukraine’s place is in the North Atlantic military alliance.
“The world is sick and, quite possibly, is on the verge of a new world war. Is it inevitable? No, it’s not like that,” said Medvedev, speaking to the participants of the “Science” marathon.
According to Medvedev, Russia was “drawn into the war by the clash of two parts of the same nation,” Agerpres notes.
In his opinion, the prospect of nuclear war not only exists, but is growing.
In this context, he called it treachery to discuss the ecological agenda in conditions where the problem of the survival of humanity is raised.
“Stop suffering because the temperature has risen by one degree in a year or period. (…) In my opinion, this is nothing compared to the prospect of being in the epicenter of an explosion with a temperature of 5000 Kelvin, a speed of 350 meters per second and a pressure of 3000 kg per square meter, with ionizing radiation and an electromagnetic pulse. Is there such a prospect today? Unfortunately yes. And it is growing every day for obvious reasons,” Medvedev said.
“And Romania dreamed for several decades”
The former president of Russia said that Russia could be the first to use nuclear weapons if aggression against it would threaten the very existence of the Russian state.
He stated that the “quiet division” of Ukraine is better than its membership in NATO or a world war.
“Greed and malice, hatred, ambition are stronger than reason and common sense. Let Poland take the western regions of Ukraine, but to be honest, Hungary and Romania have been dreaming for decades,” said Medvedev.
According to Medvedev, the leaders of Poland are discussing the creation of a confederation with the Ukrainian authorities, “and from here it is not far even to the union, as it was before.”
According to Medvedev, Poland and other countries want to implement their plans as soon as possible “before the window of opportunity closes”, and Russia and representatives of the collective West have not reached fundamental agreements.
At the same time, Medvedev said that all European politicians depend on the US, “even the quietest, most loyal ones, with whom we (Russia) have normal relations.”
The West “made fun of Russia”
In addition, Dmitry Medvedev considers it possible to “separate” some states from the USA and said that he will “keep his fists for Texas” if this state wants to become independent from Washington.
He did not rule out that the next US president will be the “legendary” Elon Musk, who has “much more popularity than (Donald) Trump himself and even more than (Joe) Biden.”
In his speech, Dmitry Medvedev repeated his accusations against the West, which “mocked and tried to weaken Russia.”
This is not the first time Dmitry Medvedev has made controversial statements and referred to the threat of nuclear war.
Ukraine’s place of honor in NATO
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg last week made his first visit to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion as a sign of support for Ukraine, which is preparing to launch a counteroffensive, Reuters reports.
The future of Ukraine lies in NATO, said the head of the Western military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, who emphasized that he would help Kyiv move from Soviet-era equipment and doctrine to NATO standards.
“I will say clearly: Ukraine’s rightful place is in the Euro-Atlantic family. Ukraine’s place of honor in NATO. And over time, our support will help make this possible,” Stoltenberg told reporters during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
The head of the North Atlantic Alliance promised that Ukraine will continue to receive military support, noting that to date NATO allies have trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and provided military aid worth 65 billion euros in terms of military aid.
Ukraine is waiting for an invitation to NATO
“NATO is with you today, tomorrow and as long as you want,” Stoltenberg said before inviting Zelensky to the NATO summit in Vilnius in July.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that it is time for NATO to make a political decision to invite Ukraine to join the military alliance, and that Kyiv wants to know when it will become a member.
The Ukrainian leader also said July’s NATO summit in Vilnius could be “historic,” suggesting that is when he hopes Ukraine will be formally invited to join the alliance.
