Australia: woman arrested at airport with gold that… kills in luggage

Nearly 50 years after the release of the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, Sydney Airport authorities in Australia announced the arrest of an American woman who had a golden revolver in her luggage.

The gold-plated pistol was in working order, but contained 24 carat gold.

The 28-year-old woman, who arrived in Sydney on Sunday, did not have a permit to import or possess firearms into Australia, the Australian Border Force (ABF) said in a statement.

Australia has some of the toughest gun laws in the world, and importing firearms “intentionally” without prior authorization is illegal. The maximum penalty for this crime in Australia is 10 years in prison.

The woman, who has not been named, appeared before a local court on Monday and was released on bail. Her visa status and continued stay in Australia are now dependent on the judiciary. According to the ABF, depending on the outcome, he could be expelled from the country.

ABF Commander Justin Bathurst said the arrest showed the diligence of the force’s officers and the sophistication of the country’s detection technology.

In 1974, James Bond: The Man with the Golden Gun was released.
