OUR India by the end of April, it will become the most populous country in the world, surpassing China as the UN estimates that its population will exceed 1.425 billion.
“China will soon cede its position as the most populous country in the world. India’s population will reach 1,425,775,850 by the end of the month, equaling and then surpassing China’s, according to the United Nations Office of Economic and Social Affairs.
A UN Population Fund (UNFPA) report dated April 19 says India’s population will reach 1.428 billion by mid-year, compared to China’s 1.425 billion.
“China’s population reached 1.426 billion in 2022 and has begun to decline. China’s population is predicted to fall below 1 billion by the end of the century, while India’s population will continue to rise for many decades to come,” the statement said.
According to official statistics released at the beginning of the year, China’s population declined last year for the first time since 1960-61.when the famine of 1959 claimed the lives of tens of millions of people.
Surprisingly, the decline in China’s population is recorded at a time when the country loosened its one-child policy. Ten years ago, couples in China weren’t allowed to have more than one child. From 2021, up to three can be made.
There are no official population statistics in India. The last census took place in 2011 and the 2021 census was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
