Ukraine – Crimea: a storm of reactions to the statements of the Chinese ambassador in Paris

France, Ukraine and the Baltic states have expressed dismay that the Chinese ambassador in Paris has questioned the sovereignty of former Soviet countries such as Ukraine.

Asked about his position on whether Crimea is part of Ukraine, Chinese Ambassador Lou Chaiet said in an interview broadcast on French television yesterday Friday that Crimea is historically part of Russia and was offered to Ukraine by former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. .

“These former Soviet countries have no real status in international law because there is no international agreement to exercise their sovereign status,” Sage added.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, for his part, called “unacceptable the statements of the Chinese ambassador to France, which cast doubt on the sovereignty of countries that became independent with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.”

France responded today by expressing its “full solidarity” with all of its allied countries, which, it stressed, have gained independence “after decades of oppression.”

“Especially for Ukraine, it received international recognition within the borders, including Crimea, in 1991 by the entire world community, including China,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

The Representative added that China should clarify whether these comments reflect its position or not.

The three Baltic countries and Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union, also reacted.

“It is strange to hear an absurd version of the “Crimean history” from a representative of a country that treats its thousand-year history very carefully,” Mikhail Podolyak, a senior aide to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, wrote on Twitter.

“If you want to be a major political player, don’t parrot Russian propaganda,” he added.
