Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, criticized by the West for his recent comments on the war in Ukraine, reaffirmed in Lisbon on Saturday his country’s refusal to “participate” in the conflict and its willingness to contribute to a “negotiated solution” between Kyiv and Kyiv . Moscow.

“Although my government condemns the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, we support the resolution of this conflict through negotiations,” Lula da Silva said at a press conference after meeting with his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Souza in Lisbon, reports Agerpres.

“We urgently need a group of countries to sit down with Ukraine and Russia,” said the Brazilian president, who emphasized that his country “does not want to participate in war, but wants to build peace.”

The President of Portugal: “Our position is different”

“President Lula believes that the path to a just and durable peace requires prioritizing this path of negotiations. Portugal’s position is different: we believe that a possible way to peace involves Ukraine’s right to be able to respond to the invasion,” Rebelo de Souza responded.

The president of Brazil recently sparked controversy when he said in Beijing that the United States should stop “encouraging war” in Ukraine and the European Union should “start talking about peace.”

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched an unprovoked and unjustified aggression against neighboring Ukraine, but claims it is conducting a “special military operation to de-Nazify” the neighboring country and protect the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine.

Kyiv has announced that before discussing a possible peace plan with Moscow, Russian troops must leave the entire territory of Ukraine, including the regions annexed last year and the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Lula da Silva accused the US and Europe of prolonging the conflict

We will remind that the President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the other day that he discussed with China and the United Arab Emirates joint mediation in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier, he accused the US of prolonging the conflict. Last Sunday, Lula da Silva also added Europe to the list of those “encouraging hostilities”.

“Europe and the USA continue to contribute to the continuation of the war. In conditions in which they have to sit at the table and say: ‘Enough,'” said the president of Brazil.

The White House has criticized Brazil’s president, accusing him of promoting Russian and Chinese propaganda about a war started by Vladimir Putin.

“In this particular case, Brazil is repeating Russian and Chinese propaganda, regardless of the facts,” said John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council in Washington, after Lula de Silva accused Washington of “encouraging war” in Ukraine.

Earlier, the Brazilian president also said that Ukraine should give up Crimea in order to reach a peace agreement with Russia, a proposal that Kyiv rejected.

Commenting on this proposal by the Brazilian president, John Kirby said on Monday that his statements were “baseless”.
