As part of his drive to improve relations with foreign countries and Brazil’s image abroad, Lula arrived in Portugal on Friday for a five-day visit, which comes amid a spat over the Brazilian president’s recent statements about the war in Ukraine.
Lula angered many in the West when he said Ukraine was also responsible for the conflict.
Enraged by Lula’s comments about the war, the Ukrainian community in Portugal even staged a demonstration outside the Brazilian embassy on Friday.
Two Brazilian officials told Reuters that Lula would not criticize the West’s role in the war in Ukraine during her visit to Portugal.
Lula’s visit, accompanied by other Brazilian government officials, “continues Brazil’s agenda of strengthening diplomatic relations with its key partners,” the government said in a statement.
It is noted that the former President of Brazil J. Bolsonaro did not visit Portugal during his five years in power.
About 300,000 Brazilians live in Portugal and during the visit, the Brazilian leadership will sign agreements related to technology, energy transition, tourism and culture.
