Shanghai: BMW apologizes for ‘blocking’ Chinese from offering free ice cream

German automaker BMW has been forced to apologize for “slovenliness” handing out free ice cream only to foreign visitors to a car dealership in Shanghai.

Video from the event shows Mini employees offering ice cream to foreigners, but allegedly refusing to serve Chinese visitors. Mini China, owned by Germany’s BMW, said workers were handing out treats to company employees.

The topic “BMW Mini” quickly became one of the top searches on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, with over 93 million views.

The campaign “was aimed at offering a sweet dessert to adults and children visiting the exhibition. But our internal management and the inability of our employees to fulfill their duties have caused dissatisfaction, ”the company said on Thursday. “We sincerely apologize for this.”

“We must not exaggerate the problem so that it becomes ideological,” wrote Hu Xinjing, former editor-in-chief of the state-owned Global Times newspaper. “Let the employees learn their lessons and let everything get back to normal as quickly as possible,” he added.

According to FT, BBC.
