Media mogul’s son Lachlan Murdoch has dropped a libel suit against Australian news site Crikey that linked his family to the US Capitol attack.
The event comes days after Murdoch’s Fox News network settled with voting machine company Dominion over allegations of false claims that the 2020 election was rigged against Donald Trump. Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million. This is about half of the $1.6 billion originally claimed by Dominion.
Murdoch filed a lawsuit against Kraika last year over an article he claimed contained “false” and “outrageous” claims that he illegally colluded with a former U.S. president to provoke a “bloody” mob. at a protest in Washington on January 6, 2021. .
His lawyer, John Churchill, said in a statement that the tycoon remains confident that the trial, scheduled for October, will end in his favor. “However, he does not want Crikey to use the court to attract subscribers and increase its profits in the future,” his lawyer added.
Founded in 2000 and with 10 journalists, Crikey planned to claim that its opinions were factual and in the public interest.
In court documents outlining his defense, the website argued that Murdoch was morally and ethically guilty of the Capitol Hill riots because Fox News, under his control and direction, knowingly promoted false claims that the election was stolen.
