The Group of Seven (G7) of the world’s most industrialized countries is considering a near-total ban on exports to Russia because of the war it launched nearly 14 months ago against Ukraine, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported Friday, citing unnamed government sources. Tokyo.
The US news agency Bloomberg also reported that the US and other allies of Ukraine are considering imposing a “ban on the export of most goods to Russia.”
According to the agency, officials are negotiating the issue ahead of the G7 summit.
The leaders of the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan, which chairs the G7, are due to meet in May at the group’s summit in Hiroshima.
Asked about the Bloomberg report, Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno said the government was aware but declined to comment on ongoing discussions about possible additional sanctions on Russia.
“To end Russian aggression as soon as possible, it is important that the G7 remain united in tough sanctions against Russia and strong support for Ukraine,” he said at a regular briefing for accredited editors.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was also invited to take part in this year’s meeting via teleconference.
