End of an era on Twitter: blue ticks only for those who pay

Elon Musk said and did: since yesterday they said goodbye to the blue checkmark on their account on Twitter those who took it under the previous administration but did not pay the subscription of €9.92 per month or €104.16 per year (price varies slightly by country).

Even world famous personalities with millions of followers were no exception to the rule. Among those who no longer have a verified account are Beyoncé, Ben Stiller, Cristiano Ronaldo, Monica Lewinsky, Bill Gates, Pope Francis, former US President Donald Trump and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.

But also government agencies, journalistic groups, scientists and universities said goodbye to the cherished badge.

Twitter first introduced the blue tick in 2009, when a former professional baseball player sued the company, accusing the social network of allowing fake accounts to be created. Since then, the blue checkmark has become a status symbol and proof of account authenticity.

There are fears that with the loss of the blue tick, fake accounts posing as famous people will be “fun” on Twitter by Musk, who said he would soon only tweets from accounts with blue checkmarks will be displayed on the homepage every user.

Finally, there are fears that this change will bring even more misinformation to popular social networks.

Musk is $12.6 billion poorer.

However, this change on Twitter, combined with Failed starship launch and Tesla’s disappointing first-quarter results weren’t an easy achievement for Musk.

No more and no less, in just over 24 hours, the once richest man in the world lost $12.6 billion.

The most immediate impact was a drop in Tesla shares, where Elon Musk’s stake makes up most of his $163.9 billion fortune.

According to CNN, BBC.
