Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said that the city has terminated the land lease agreement in the capital with the Russian embassy and wants to return the property to the Ukrainian state, Sky News reports.
Ukraine severed relations with Russia after its invasion last February.
There are no Russian diplomats in the embassy building, which is located west of the city center.
“Today, the Kyiv City Council terminated the land lease agreement with the embassy of the aggressor state – Russia,” Klitschko said.
“He also appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine regarding the return to the Ukrainian state of the property of the “diplomatic headquarters” of the Russian barbarians,” the Ukrainian official added.
In response, the Russian news agency RIA reported, citing a source in Moscow, that if Ukraine nationalizes the embassy building, Kyiv will automatically lose ownership of its diplomatic missions in Russia.
