The governor of Russia’s vast Krasnoyarsk region has resigned, Moscow authorities announced Thursday, shortly after his son, a businessman, escaped from Italy to Russiamanaging to avoid extradition to the United States, Reuters reports.
The Russian press reports that President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on the resignation of Oleksandr Uss, but does not provide details of the reasons for it. TASS quotes a statement from Uss, according to which he received an offer from the president to work at the federal level.
Oleksandr Uss’ son, Artem Uss, was to be charged in the US with transporting oil from Venezuela in violation of sanctions and bank fraud. Last month, an Italian court allowed him to remain under house arrest, but the suspect, who was awaiting a verdict from Italian judicial authorities on extradition to the United States, disappeared from his home after removing an electronic monitoring bracelet.
Italy’s justice minister has begun disciplinary action against the three judges who ordered Uss to be placed under house arrest, two sources with direct knowledge of the case said on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Artem Uss told the Russian news agency RIA that the American charges against him were politically motivated.
The territory of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia occupies an area of almost 2.4 million square kilometers.
According to TASS, former Minister of Science and Education Mykhailo Kotyukov was appointed by Putin as the acting governor of the region. (News.ro)
