In the United States, a citizen of Belarus, Sergei K., was arrested on charges of evading sanctions against Russia worth more than 150 million euros. This was reported on the US Department of Justice website on Wednesday, April 19.

The investigation accuses a Miami resident of participating in a scheme to circumvent sanctions imposed on oligarch Sergei Kurchenko. According to the Ministry of Justice, Sergey K., together with an accomplice – a resident of Florida, John W. – bought steel casting materials worth $ 150 million for two companies “related to Kurchenko” over three years. Sergei K.’s alleged accomplice was arrested on the same charges on April 14.

Sergei K. and John W. are charged with criminal conspiracy to circumvent or violate US sanctions. If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison, the Justice Ministry said.

Ukrainian businessman Sergei Kurchenko was sanctioned by the United States in 2015 “for his role in the misappropriation of Ukrainian state assets or economically significant organizations”. In 2018, two companies associated with it were also subject to restrictions – for providing material support to the so-called “DNR” and “LNR” and to the illegal coal trade in these territories.
