Russia’s Federal Security Service appears to be conducting a “large-scale restructuring of internal security agencies,” the Institute for the Study of War said in its assessment of the conflict on Thursday. Moscow police are suspected of providing information about Russian security forces, including some citizens of Ukraine, Meduza notes.
According to ISW, the FSB appears to be conducting a wide-ranging review of internal security agencies.
The Russian state agency TASS reported on Wednesday that the FSB and the Main Directorate of the Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in recent weeks conducted mass inspections of the Moscow Police Department and several police departments in the Russian capital due to “a leak of data from Russian security forces at the request of citizens of Ukraine.”
Russian sources reported that the suspected policemen leaked personal data about Russian security forces to outsiders, some of whom are citizens of Ukraine.
The raids of the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs on Moscow police departments are taking place against the background of a series of arrests and resignations of well-known members of the leadership of Rosgvardia, the Russian National Guard.
According to RBC, access data and passwords could also have been hacked, writes Meduza.
The Kremlin is likely to push for such arrests and investigations as part of an overhaul of the domestic security apparatus to remove officials who have fallen out of favor with the Kremlin and further tighten its grip on domestic security agencies, ISW said.
The leak was discovered this spring, and investigators reportedly found several ads selling the information on the dark web.
According to Baza, several Moscow police officers have been arrested and two high-ranking officers have decided to resign.
