WSJ: Ukraine asks Turkey to seize ship allegedly carrying stolen wheat

Ukrainian authorities have asked Turkey to seize a ship carrying thousands of tons of grain allegedly stolen from Russian-controlled areas of the country, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Panamanian-flagged ship arrived at the Black Sea port of Samsun on Monday carrying 19,000 tons of barley, according to shipping records. A few days earlier, Ukrainian prosecutors asked Turkish authorities to arrest the ship, claiming it was loading barley at a port in occupied Crimea.

The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office asked the Turkish authorities to take samples and interrogate the captain and his crew. They also report that the ship has disabled its tracking system.

The vessel is operated by Dubai-based Tower Shipping and owned by one of its subsidiaries, Alvion Maritime, according to the prosecutor’s letter and international shipping database Equasis.

Russian companies have smuggled thousands of tons of grain stolen from Ukraine. The Kremlin denies that Russia is stealing grain from Ukraine.

Turkish authorities have taken steps in recent months to crack down on purchases of stolen Ukrainian grain after Kiev publicly urged Turkey to seize another ship allegedly loaded with stolen grain last July, diplomats said.

Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has been in conflict between Russia and the West since the Kremlin launched its invasion last year. Turkey sold weapons to Ukraine, deepening economic ties with Russia, and held two rounds of failed peace talks between the warring countries.

Last year, Turkey, along with the UN, struck a deal that allowed Ukraine to resume grain shipments across the Black Sea.
