The White House sharply criticized Brazil on Monday after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused the United States of prolonging the conflict in Ukraine over the weekend following a trip to the United Arab Emirates and China, AFP and Agerpres reported.
“In this particular case, Brazil is repeating Russian and Chinese propaganda without taking into account the facts,” said John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, a body directly linked to the US president.
In China, Lula da Silva, who met with Xi Jinping, accused Washington of “encouraging war” in Ukraine, a charge he repeated Sunday at a news conference in Abu Dhabi.
“Europe and the USA continue to contribute to the continuation of the war. In conditions where they have to sit at the table and say: ‘Enough’,” Lula da Silva also said in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
These criticisms echo those formulated by Moscow and Beijing, which blame the West for the war that began in February 2022 with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Brazil declares neutrality regarding the war in Ukraine
Unlike several Western countries, Brazil has never imposed financial sanctions against Russia, has not agreed to supply Kyiv with ammunition, and is trying to position itself, like China, as a mediator. The former right-wing president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, also took this position.
“We are grateful to our Brazilian friends for their excellent understanding of the genesis of this situation” in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded on Monday before a scheduled meeting with President Lula da Silva in Brasilia.
“Of course we want the war to end,” insisted John Kirby. “It can happen right now, today, if Putin stops attacking Ukraine and withdraws his troops,” he emphasized.
“Recent comments by Brazil that Ukraine should consider the formal concession of the Crimean Peninsula as a peaceful concession are simply inappropriate,” the US official continued.
