US Ambassador to Russia Lynn Tracy said today that she visited for the first time in prison Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter accused by Moscow of espionage, and found him in a good mood.
“This is the first time we have consular access to Evan Gerskovich since his wrongful detention two weeks ago. He feels good and is holding up. We reiterate our call for Evan’s immediate release,” Tracy said in a brief statement in Russian on the messaging app Telegram.
Gershkovich was arrested last month in the Ural city of Yekaterinburg.
The newspaper, like Washington, rejected the charge of espionage, which carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
