Sudan: fighting continues, casualties soar

At least 97 civilians have been killed since fighting began between the Sudanese army and paramilitaries, the Sudanese doctors’ association said in a statement on Monday.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 83 deaths and 1,126 injuries as a result of heavy fighting between the armed forces and the powerful paramilitary organization Dynames Taheias Totaka (DTY).

An organization that is part of the UN system has recorded deaths in the states of Khartoum, South Kordofan, North Darfur and others since Thursday.

The WHO stressed that hospitals in the capital Khartoum, home to about 6 million civilians, were overwhelmed with the wounded as a result of heavy fighting over the weekend that involved armored vehicles, artillery and aircraft.

Many of the nine hospitals that take in wounded civilians face shortages of blood, transfusion supplies and other life-saving supplies. Interruptions in water and electricity, as well as a lack of fuel for generators in hospitals, make their work even more difficult. The agency notes that a huge shortage of staff, especially anesthesiologists, is being reported.

As Metropolitan Savvas of Suvia and All Sudan told ERT, at least 15 Orthodox were stuck in the Orthodox metropolis, including Greeks, Sudanese and Ethiopians.
