
Chairman of the African Union Commission Musa Faki Mahamat will travel “immediately” to Sudan to persuade the two warring parties to declare a ceasefire, the pan-African organization said as violent clashes continue in the country for a second day.
Expressing “deep concern” about the situation, the AU called on the forces of generals ruling Sudan to “protect civilians,” in a statement released after an emergency meeting of the Peace and Security Council this afternoon.
At the moment, there is no concrete information about the peacekeeping mission undertaken by Musa Faki Mahamat.
The AU called on the warring parties to “quickly reach a peaceful solution” and engage in dialogue to resolve their differences, “unequivocally rejecting any outside interference that could complicate the situation in Sudan.”
A little earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdul spoke on the phone like a general Abdel Fatah al Burhanhead of the transitional government, as well as with the general Mohammed Hamdan Daglo or “Khameti”head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and called for a de-escalation of the situation.
According to Saudi Public Television, the minister called for peace.
Meanwhile, according to Reuters reporters in Khartoum and other Sudanese cities, the country’s state television stopped broadcasting this afternoon, but the reasons have not yet been clarified.
