Local media reported that on Saturday, a fire in an apartment building in Dubai in a popular area of the Persian Gulf emirate killed 16 people and injured at least 10.
The fire broke out in the middle of the day on the fourth floor of a building in Al-Ras, one of the city’s older districts where mostly foreign workers live.
“First investigations indicate that the cause of the fire is a lack of safety in the building,” Civil Protection said in a statement.
The nationality of the victims has not been released, but Indian media reports say four Indians are among the dead.
Dubai, one of the seven United Arab Emirates, is home to about 3.3 million people, 90% of whom are foreigners.
“The competent authorities are conducting a thorough investigation in order to draw up a detailed report on the causes of the accident,” the report said, according to local media.
The city has had major fires in the past, causing significant damage but no casualties.
In 2017, the authorities announced stricter building regulations to limit the risk of fire, mainly associated with flammable materials used for the exterior of buildings.
