Montana bans TikTok

The US state of Montana on Friday voted in favor of a bill banning TikTok statewide.

This is an unprecedented bill for the country and “it is not clear how the state will be able to enforce such a ban,” comments Forbes magazine.

The Republican-led Montana House of Representatives approved the bill by a vote of 54 to 43 and sent it to Governor Greg Gianforte, also a Republican, who is expected to sign the bill. Last year, he called TikTok a “serious threat” to national security and data protection.

The bill would prevent online mobile app stores from allowing Montana residents to install TikTok on their devices.

The law will go into effect on January 1, 2024, although it is unclear how the state will enforce the ban.
