Sudan: Testimony of two Greek victims of a rocket attack near a church

Testimony of the Greeks wounded in Sudanbroadcasts ERT.

In the morning, clashes between the army and paramilitaries have been taking place in many areas, with both sides accusing each other of attempting a coup d’état.

Two Greeks were injured in Khartoum by a rocket that fell near the temple after the end of Sunday service, Metropolitan Sawa of Nuba said in an ERT report.

“Two Greeks came and told us that we must stop because there are many tanks outside the temple, a lot of army and the situation is dangerous. We shortened the service, but we had an unpleasant event, because these Greeks, leaving the church and heading for their homes, because they live in the Greek community, a rocket fell next to them and they were very seriously injured. They are in the hospital, waiting to be operated on or not.

“They are hitting Metropolis with bullets, there are Greek flags outside, and this has never happened. The situation is very bad, smoke is coming from everywhere. Apparently, they hit the ministries, because around the Metropolis there are ministries of foreign affairs, internal affairs, justice, and palace ministries. Obviously they are hitting the ministries because you can’t go out, it’s too dangerous.”

Gerasimos Pagoulatos, honorary and unpaid Greek consul in Sudan, notes: “Now Khartoum is dangerous. It should take a couple of days for the situation to calm down so that some planes can land and, together with the EU, which has oversight, an evacuation can take place if necessary.”

Vice President of the Greek Community of Sudan, Robert Fahimi, describes: “There is too much shooting outside, bullets are heard, that’s it, it’s very difficult (…) everyone is afraid, we don’t know what to do, we are trying to see if we can leave at all, if there is way, but the airport is also closed.”
