Carabinieri arrested today in Sicily 56-year-old Laura Bonafede, who, according to the Italian press, was a partner of Cosa Nostra leader Matteo Messina Denaro.
Denaro was arrested in Palermo, Sicily, last January while outside a private city clinic.
Teacher, daughter of a major mafia
As the newspaper La Repubblica writes, Bonafede, a teacher by profession, allegedly offered help and cover to the leader of the mafia for a very long time. She herself is the daughter of a major mafia, and her husband was sentenced to life imprisonment, always for mafia activities.
According to sources in the prosecutor’s office of Palermo, Laura Bonafede allegedly used an encrypted code while communicating with Messina Denaro when she wanted to refer to accomplices and illegal activities. At the same time, until the day of her arrest, information so far shows that she provided the “godfather of the godfathers” with the necessary food and other essentials to protect him from the coronavirus.
According to the Italian news agency Ansa, their relationship allegedly began in the mid-1990s.
