US public radio NPR announced today that “his (…) accounts will no longer be active on Twitter” after Elon Musk’s platform decided to label him first as a “government” news outlet and then as “government-sponsored.” which undermines his credibility.
“NPR accounts will no longer be active on Twitter because the platform is taking steps that undermine our credibility and falsely imply that we are not independent journalists,” National Public Radio said in a statement.
“We do not impose our journalism on platforms that have shown an interest in undermining our trust and public opinion about our journalistic independence,” he added.
To date, NPR’s main account on the platform has 8.8 million followers.
An NPR spokeswoman, interviewed by AFP, said the network’s journalists, as well as partner stations, will decide for themselves whether they want to stay on the platform or not.
Last week, NPR protested after Twitter labeled its page as “U.S. government-affiliated media,” placing it in the same category as Russia’s Sputnik or RT accounts. Twitter then changed its labeling, calling NPR “government-sponsored.” The same markup was added to the British BBC page.
NPR was founded in 1970 and is a prominent radio station in the US. It is funded primarily through advertising and sponsorships, as well as through stations in its network. He claims that less than 1% of his operating budget comes from federal funds.
The rebrand comes just days after Twitter de-certified the New York Times account. NPR and the New York Times are respected media outlets in the US, but are considered “too” leftist by some conservatives.
Elon Musk admitted in an interview with the BBC that running Twitter is a rollercoaster ride and admitted that “many mistakes” were made six months after he bought the company for $44 billion.
