President of France Emmanuel Macron stated today that being an “ally” of the US does not mean being a “vassal”, backing up the contradictory statements he made about Taiwan.
“Being an ally doesn’t mean you obey, it doesn’t mean you don’t have the right to think for yourself,” he said at a press conference in Amsterdam. “France stands for the status quo in Taiwan,” “it supports the one-China policy and the search for a peaceful solution to the situation,” he added.
In interviews with the Politico news agency and Les Echos newspaper, Macron warned of the risk of being drawn into a crisis over Taiwan. In the event of a conflict over Taiwan, “the worst thing for us Europeans would be to become followers” and “adapt to American rhythms and China’s overreaction,” Macron said, advocating “strategic autonomy” for the EU. .
